A Tribute to William (Bill) F. Waite

Bill Waite, the long-standing SEE Industry Chair, passed away unexpectedly on 25 July 2015. For many years a leading advocate and promoter of modeling and simulation as a Technology, Profession, Industry, and Marketplace, Bill, Co-founder and Chairman of The AEgis Technologies Group, Inc., was a true pioneer in Modeling & Simulation. His 45+ year career spanned the decades in which M&S came of age. Long a leader of numerous M&S activities, his influence on the development of modeling and simulation within academia, across industry, and internationally has been broad and deep. If you are in anyway connected to modeling and simulation, you have likely been touched by Bill’s influence. For SEE, Bill was actively engaged from the very first meetings that resulted in the 2009 creation of “Smackdown”, now SEE.

Bill was impassioned about M&S education and worked diligently in advocacy and support of establishment of Master’s Degree and Ph.D. programs in M&S at UAH, UCF, Old Dominion University, the Naval Post Graduate School, and others. He was an influential, active member of the Modeling and Simulation Professional Certification Commission, which established the concept, protocols, testing, and training for the Certified Modeling & Simulation Professional (CMSP) program.

He took his passion and energy to a national and international scale, creating and leading the international SimSummit Round Table from its inception in 2002, and providing critical and influential support to Congressmen Randy Forbes and Bobby Scott and the Congressional M&S Caucus in passing House Resolution 487 in 2007, which established M&S as a National Critical Technology. Bill was also the leading proponent of a sustained effort that resulted in standup of the National Modeling and Simulation Coalition in 2012. In addition, during the past two decades, he twice led the Society for Modeling and Simulation International (SCS) as Chairman of the Board of Directors, and served twice on the Executive Committee of the Simulation Interoperability Standards Organization (SISO). Bill was also active in the National Training and Simulation Association (NTSA), served the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) as a member of its Board of Trustees, and was a member of the Board of Directors of Economic Development Partnership of Alabama Foundation.

Beyond his leadership of AEgis over the past 25+ years, Bill spent a significant amount of his time working to raise national and international awareness and use of Modeling & Simulation technology. He worked diligently to transform the industry’s ability to collaborate and communicate through the establishment of industry forums such as the Alabama Modeling and Simulation Council (AMSC) and the Virginia Modeling and Simulation Partnership (VMSP). He additionally was a member of various NATO technical forums and groups.

For those who knew him, Bill’s energy, passion, expertise, and advocacy for M&S will long be remembered as singularly instrumental in the development of M&S as a Technology, Profession, Industry, and Marketplace.

For SEE, Stefan Sandberg, President of Pitch Technologies, a leading provider of innovative state-of-the-art interoperability products, services and solutions for development of distributed systems, will succeed Bill as SEE Industry Chair.
